About Railway Protection Force
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) operates as an armed force under the Union Ministry of Railways, Government of India. Established by the RPF Act of 1957, enacted by the Indian Parliament, its primary objective is to enhance the protection and security of railway property and passenger areas. Endowed with authority, the RPF can conduct searches, make arrests, conduct inquiries, and prosecute offenses as per the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act of 1966 and the Railways Act of 1989, with amendments over time. Since 2004, the RPF has been entrusted with the added responsibility of securing railway passenger areas and ensuring passenger safety. However, the authority for arrests under other penal laws remains with the Government Railway Police (GRP) of each state.
